1. Background & Justification

Agriculture is the backbone of Nyabihu District, with most households relying on farming for food and income. However, climate change has led to erratic rainfall, soil degradation, and reduced crop yields, threatening food security and livelihoods. Smallholder farmers, who form the majority, often lack knowledge and resources to adapt to these challenges.

To address this, the Climate-Smart Agriculture & Food Security Project will promote sustainable farming techniques, improve community resilience, and ensure stable food production in Mukamira Sector.


2. Objectives

Promote climate-smart farming practices to increase agricultural productivity.

Train farmers on soil conservation, water management, and organic farming.

Introduce drought-resistant crops and agroforestry techniques.

Enhance food security by reducing post-harvest losses and improving market access.

Build community resilience to climate change through knowledge-sharing and innovation.

3. Key Activities

🔹 Farmer Training Workshops: Hands-on sessions on climate-smart farming, crop diversification, and regenerative agriculture.

🔹 Demonstration Farms: Establish model farms showcasing organic composting, irrigation methods, and agroforestry.

🔹 Distribution of Climate-Resilient Seeds: Provide drought-tolerant and high-yield seeds to farmers.

🔹 Soil & Water Conservation: Train farmers on contour farming, mulching, and water harvesting.

🔹 Sustainable Livelihoods: Introduce beekeeping, mushroom farming, and permaculture as alternative income sources.

🔹 Community Awareness Campaigns: Organize radio talks, school programs, and farmer field days on sustainable agriculture.

4. Expected Impact

🌱 Increased Crop Yields: Farmers will produce more food using climate-smart techniques.

💧 Improved Water & Soil Health: Conservation efforts will reduce erosion and enhance soil fertility.

6. Sustainability & Scalability

This project is designed for long-term impact through:

Training local farmers as trainers to continue knowledge transfer.

Creating a self-sustaining seed bank for resilient crop production.

Forming cooperatives to ensure market access and financial sustainability.

By empowering communities with climate-smart solutions, this project will help transform agriculture into a more sustainable and profitable sector in Nyabihu District. 🌾🌍
